Some Enlightening Links

Rangefinder Forum

A rather friendly web forum for photographers interested in rangefinders, be they German, Japanese or Russian, 35mm, medium or large format.

Johnnie B. Baker's Budget Files

One of my friends from grad school has a blog that talks about any number of things -- finding funding for grad school, politics, the Dodgers, the ins and outs of learning Azerbaijani and so forth. By the way, Johnnie B. Baker is not his real name, but I will not blow his cover...

This American Life

This is a radio show that is just better than any other out there. You can listen to all the shows on the site, which is what I am doing as I write. Maybe if you turn it on as well, we will have a star-crossed lovers thing going on. Just don’t expect me to return your calls…

Rex Mundi

One of my best friends, Arvid Nelson, is the co-founder and writer of this extraordinary comic. The website and web-comic are top-notch, and the comic is great. It has just come out from Image Comics. In stores now!

Dante Stella's Website

Dante Stella is a great photographer and an enlightening writer on technical issues in photography. He offers a great deal of knowledge and evaluates equipment fairly and without regard to pedigree. His reviews are accompanied by intelligence, beautiful sample images, and wit. His site was largely the inspiration for my own effort. I liked his clean black and white design and his image gallery with thumbnails in a frame along the bottom of the page.

Luigi Crescenzi's Leicatime Store

Luigi Crescenzi is a Leica dealer based in Rome. In addition to selling new and used Leica related items, he sells beautiful, hand-crafted Italian leather camera cases. Not only do they look great, they protect the camera, muffle the already quiet shutter noise, and he has built in grip models that increase that make the cameras feel even more heavenly in your hands. Beyond this, he is an incredibly kind and generous person, and I would encourage anyone to go to him first for any Leica related purchase.

Japanese Engrish

This site will make you die of laughter. I love Japan, but I love it more when they mess up our language. This site is top of cool.

Karen Nakamura's Photoethnography.com

Karen Nakamura is an Anthropology professor at Macalester College who specializes in photoethnography -- the "art and science of representing other cultures visually". She has some wonderful shots, and has some great advice on equipment as well.

Photo.net

Though this site has a fairly large popultion of jerk-offs, it is still a great resource for some good (and horrible) photography, information on photography and cameras, and classifieds.

The Vladivostok News

Vladivostok’s own English language web-newspaper – sometimes enlightening, always frightening. I suggest they have a little counter for the number of contract killings in a given week in the corner, but it might be distracting if it operated real-time. Well, just because it is dangerous to be Mafioso there, it does not mean that its not a great town…

Head-Fi.org

This is a web forum where a bunch of people who love music and headphones come together to tell each other how to spend their money. The community is wonderful, and the site is remarkably free of trolls, goblins, and other creatures of the night.
